UPWARD BOUND OLYMPICS BRINGING HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS
TO COMPETE ON CONCORD UNIVERSITY CAMPUS
ATHENS, W.Va. – Hundreds of high school students from Upward Bound programs in West Virginia will compete in the 2013 Upward Bound Olympics on Concord University’s Athens campus Tuesday, July 2.
The event is being hosted by Concord University’s Upward Bound. Organizers say that the Concord community is dedicated to making this a fun and memorable experience for the students.
The Olympics incorporates education and athletics with a friendly and socially inspiring atmosphere. Participants have the opportunity to meet new people and to broaden their educational horizons.
A wide variety of events and competitions is planned throughout the day. Activities range from basketball, tennis, soccer and cross country to chess, singing, a quiz bowl and an art contest.
Of special note is the oratory contest. During this public speaking portion of the Olympics, one student from each program will explain to their elected officials why the Upward Bound Program is important and why the program should receive continued funding. The oratory contest will be held in the main theater of the Fine Arts Center beginning at 11 a.m.
The day concludes with an awards ceremony and a dance.
