CONCORD UNIVERSITY HOLDS SPRING 2012 COMMENCEMENT

ATHENS, W.Va. – Concord University held spring commencement on Saturday, May 12, 2012 in the main gym of the Leslie R. and Ruby Webb Carter Center.

Two ceremonies were held to accommodate the number of graduates and their families and guests. A morning ceremony began at 10 a.m. and an afternoon ceremony was held at 2 p.m.

Students participated in ceremonies based on their fields of study. The morning ceremony included candidates for graduation in the master’s program and undergraduates from the divisions of Business, Education and Human Performance, and Fine Arts. Participating in the afternoon ceremony were candidates for graduation from the divisions of Languages and Literature, Natural Sciences, Social Sciences, Interdisciplinary Studies and the Regents program.

Valedictorian for the Spring 2012 Class is Carrie Elizabeth Honaker of Ronceverte, W.Va. She graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Education degree. Her major was secondary education and her teaching field was music pre-k-adult.

Candidates meeting requirements for graduation in May 2012 and December 2011 and those who may qualify for graduation in August 2012 participated in the commencement ceremony.

More than 300 individuals participated including graduate candidates and undergraduate candidates. The Division of Social Sciences has the largest number of candidates for graduation and the Division of Education and Human Performance is second.

Out-of-state candidates represent Alabama, California, Delaware, Georgia, Maryland, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia and the District of Columbia.

International students representing Bulgaria, Canada, Japan, Nepal, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Venezuela are also among the candidates.

The Class of 2012 also includes several veterans.

A reception was held on the front lawn of the Carter Center following both ceremonies.

Concord University’s Center for Academic Technologies taped both the morning and afternoon commencement ceremonies. DVDs may be purchased for $20 each and may be ordered by calling 304-384-5126. (Please specify morning or afternoon ceremony.) DVDs will be shipped within four to six weeks of the event.
