‘NIGHT IN THE ART GALLERY’ EXHIBIT AT CONCORD UNIVERSITY
FEATURES MERCER COUNTY STUDENT ARTISTS

ATHENS, W.Va. - The third annual “Night in the Art Gallery” reception will be held on Saturday, May 19, 2012 from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Arthur Butcher Gallery in the Alexander Fine Arts Center on the Concord University campus in Athens, W.Va. The artwork will be on display in the gallery through June 1, 2012.

This art exhibition is a continuing partnership between Concord University’s Art Department and Mercer County Schools.

One goal of the exhibition is to bring attention to the importance of art in local schools. “Art education teaches life skills such as articulating a vision, learning to solve problems, building self-confidence and self-discipline,” Dr. Lauri Reidmiller, Concord University assistant professor of art, said. “Creating art strengthens problem-solving and critical-thinking skills, adding to overall academic achievement and school success.”

Visitors to the reception will have the opportunity to view student artwork from Bluefield High School, PikeView High School, Princeton Senior High School, Princeton Middle School, Glenwood Middle School and three elementary schools.

During this interactive reception, guests will be encouraged to create their own works of art by participating in hands-on activities and watching demonstrations conducted by Concord University National Art Education Student Chapter members under the direction of Dr. Reidmiller. Visitors will also have the opportunity to watch throwing demonstrations on a potter’s wheel conducted by Concord University Assistant Professor of Art Jamey Biggs.

Concord University Art Education students David Poticher, Tiffany Blair, Holly Jackson, Tim Hiner, Kimberly Sutphin, Cassady Berry, Kimberly Cook and Nichole Grizzle will be actively involved in installing the show and conducting the hands-on activities during the opening.
