GIANT TRAVELING MAP VISITING CONCORD UNIVERSITY

ATHENS, W.Va. – Concord University is the latest destination for National Geographic’s Giant Traveling Map of North America. The huge interactive map will be on the Athens campus March 26-April 6. Measuring approximately 26 feet by 35 feet, the colorful vinyl floor map encourages learning about geography and map reading in a fun, entertaining way and is designed for students in grades K-8.

The map’s visit to Concord coincides with the 2012 West Virginia Geographic Bee being held at the University on Friday, March 30. Bee competitors and their families will explore the map that day in the small gym of the Carter Center.

During the other days of its stay on campus, the map will be located in the Ballroom of the Jerry L. Beasley Student Center. Area teachers are invited to bring their students to campus for learning activities on the continent of North America.

“Knowledge of geography is key to our ability to survive and to compete in today’s interconnected world,” Linda Poff, West Virginia Geographic Bee coordinator, said. “Geographic knowledge is essential to being an informed global citizen, which helps us understand events and issues that affect everyone.”

The educational and entertaining activities associated with the giant map are designed to promote geographic literacy. In addition to the map of North America, Giant Traveling Maps of Africa, Asia, Europe, South America and the Pacific Ocean are also available.
