CONVOCATION OF SCHOLARS, FOUNDERS’ DAY TO MARK CONCORD UNIVERSITY’S 140TH ANNIVERSARY

ATHENS, W.Va. – Concord University will mark its 140th anniversary with a Convocation of Scholars and Founders’ Day Celebration on Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2012. The event begins at 1 p.m. in the Main Theatre of the Alexander Fine Arts Center.

Concord received its charter from the West Virginia Legislature on Feb. 28, 1872.
The Founders’ Day Remarks are being presented by Princeton, W.Va. attorney Robert E. Holroyd.

A native of Princeton, Holroyd received both his undergraduate degree and law degree from West Virginia University. He served with the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict including three years of active duty and special assignments with the military police.

Holroyd was Assistant Prosecuting Attorney in Mercer County from 1961-1964. He was elected to the West Virginia House of Delegates in 1964. He was Mercer County’s Prosecuting Attorney from 1965-1967.

Holroyd has been a consultant to the Governor’s Committee on Crime, Delinquency and Correction. He has lectured on criminal law and police science at several institutions including the West Virginia State Police Academy.

His extensive civic involvement includes membership on the West Virginia School Building Authority, the Mercer County 911 committee and the Princeton Rotary Club. He was also instrumental in the establishment of Princeton Community Hospital. Holroyd is a member of the Mercer County and West Virginia State bar associations.

A marker recognizing Holroyd Hall will be unveiled during the ceremony. The marker will be placed at the corner of Vermillion and Cooper streets in Athens, former site of the Concord landmark, at a later date.

Holroyd Hall was built during the administration of Dr. C.C. Rossey (1918-1924) as a men’s residence hall.

A proclamation denoting 2012 as “The Year of the Alumni” at Concord University will be issued during the program.

Recipients of academic and service awards will also be recognized during the ceremony. Members of the campus community including faculty, staff and students will be honored for teaching, scholarship, creativity and service.

A reception will be held following the program in the Fine Arts Lobby.

The public is invited to attend the celebration. For more information contact Kati Whittaker-Hatfield, special events coordinator, at 304-384-6286 or cuevents@concord.edu
