SCHOLARSHIP FUND-RAISER TO BENEFIT CONCORD UNIVERSITY STUDENTS

ATHENS, W.Va. – “Concord University scholarships have helped me accomplish my goals,” Ripley, W.Va. native Erica White says.

A junior at Concord, White is student speaker for the Concord University Foundation, Inc. Charleston Dinner. The scholarship fund-raiser is being held Thursday, Nov. 10, 2011 at Embassy Suites in Charleston. A reception begins at 6 p.m. followed by dinner at 7 p.m.

White says she is eager to share with dinner guests how scholarship funds have enabled her to pursue a bachelor’s degree at Concord in pre-kindergarten to kindergarten special education.

“Without my aid…I may have not been able to come here in the first place,” she said.

The Bonner Scholar who also serves as a resident assistant and Student Ambassador at Concord plans to further her education at “The Campus Beautiful.”

“I plan to stay at Concord to get my master’s in educational leadership and afterwards begin teaching,” she said.

White shares the platform with former West Virginia Governor and College Board President Gaston Caperton who is the keynote speaker.

Caperton served as governor of West Virginia from 1989 to 1997. He was a fellow at the Institute of Politics at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government, and executive director of Columbia University’s Institute on Education & Government at Teachers College.

In recognition for his lifetime of leadership on education issues, Caperton has received numerous awards and 10 honorary degrees. Concord University honored him with the Doctor of Humanitarian Service, honoris causa in 2007.

Caperton was appointed to his current position in 1999. Under his leadership, the College Board has grown to become a leading advocacy organization dedicated to excellence and equity in education.
