ATHENS - The Marsh Memorial Carillon will be featured in a live concert Thursday, May 5, 2011. The concert begins at 6:30 p.m. on the Athens campus.
David Breneman is guest carillonneur. He is currently carillonneur at Luray Singing Tower in Luray, Va. and director of music at Reformation Lutheran Church in New Market, Va. He has performed internationally in southern France and in Montreal, Canada.

Breneman said his 45-minute concert will include “a section of music about mountains.” “Mountain Peaks,” a piece by 20th century composer Johan Franco, is among the selections he plans to perform.
Donated by the late President Emeritus of Concord Joseph F. Marsh, Jr., the Marsh Memorial Carillon is West Virginia’s only true carillon. The world class instrument was dedicated on the Athens campus in 1997.

A true carillon has no electrical amplification and consists of at least 23 tuned, cast bronze bells. The 48 bells of Concord’s carillon were cast by the Paccard Founderie at Annecy, France. The largest bell, called the bourdon, weighs 4,310 pounds.

Breneman is a repeat performer on the Marsh Memorial Carillon. “Dr. Marsh had me here several times,” he said.

“The activity of that instrument is very light…easy to play, very responsive,” Breneman said of Concord’s carillon. “They are wonderful French bells. The Paccard bells have a wonderful reputation.”

The Marsh Memorial Carillon is located atop the administration building. Concert guests are invited to bring chairs and blankets to sit in the lawn between the administration building and fine arts center and enjoy the concert. The bells are audible across campus and into parts of the town of Athens.

The concert is free and open to the public. Refreshment will be served.
