Morgantown Student Wins West Virginia Geographic Bee

ATHENS - Abel Abraham, an 8th grader from St. Francis Catholic School in Morgantown, is the first place winner in the 2011 West Virginia Geographic Bee. The event was held Friday, April 1 at Concord University.

Abraham will represent West Virginia in the national competition in Washington, D.C. May 24-25, 2011. The winner of that contest will be the National Geographic Bee champion.

A field of approximately 80 4th through 8th graders from across the Mountain State competed. Second place winner is Zane Lewis, a 7th grader representing Horace Mann Middle School in Charleston. Third place went to Samuel DiLima, a 7th grader from Shepherdstown Middle School in Shepherdstown.

Organized by the National Geographic Society, this year’s Geographic Bee is sponsored by Google Inc. At the state level, the Bee is also sponsored by Plum Creek.
