Pianist Leon Bates Performing Duke Ellington Jazz Program at Concord University

ATHENS - American pianist Leon Bates will bring his Duke Ellington jazz program to the stage of the Alexander Fine Arts Center at Concord University Tuesday, Oct. 19 at 7 p.m.

Bates is known for surprising audiences with his jazz interpretations of classical music and unusual bodybuilder physique for a concert pianist. He has played famous venues across the United States as well as in Canada, Italy, France, Austria, England, Ireland and Africa, including La Scala in Milan and Carnegie Hall in New York City.

Concord University’s Artist Lecture Series is bringing Bates to Athens. His upcoming appearance will give the audience a glimpse of his concert with the Duke Ellington Orchestra in Rome’s Olympic Stadium before an audience of 20,000 people gathered to pay tribute to Christopher Columbus.

Tickets for Bates’ performance are available through the Concord University Box Office at and by calling (304) 384-5101 or emailing Admission is free for Concord faculty, staff and students. Tickets are $5 for adults, $4 for senior citizens and $2 for non-Concord students with identification.
