Concord University Celebrating Homecoming Oct. 11-16

ATHENS - Concord University’s annual Homecoming celebration is set for Oct. 11-16, 2010. A busy agenda awaits alumni, students, faculty, staff and other members of the Concord community.

Special recognition of all Concord graduating classes in the “tens” highlights festivities for 2010. Classes being honored include 1950, 1960, 1970, 1980, 1990, 2000 and 2010. Members of these classes will have the opportunity to reminisce and celebrate together at the social and banquet on Friday, Oct. 15 and tailgate at the football game on Saturday, Oct. 16.

Reunion football teams from 1960 and 1985 are also encouraged to attend the social and banquet and will be recognized prior to the football game.

The social begins at 5 p.m. in the alumni lounge of the Jerry L. Beasley Student Center and the banquet begins at 6 p.m. in the ballroom.

Blacksburg, Va. based musician Kat Mills will provide entertainment for the evening. Mills, a solo acoustic performer and songwriter, is described as having “a powerful range…inspiring soulful material…a clean honest sound, reminiscent of another time, commenting on today.” More on Mills can be located at: http://www.katmills.com/

Cost for the banquet is $20 per person. Reservations are required and may be made by email at alumni@concord.edu or by calling 1-304-384-5348. Guests may pay at the door.

The “tens” will also gather at the Homecoming football game on Oct. 16 when the Mountain Lions take on the Glenville State Pioneers. Kickoff is 3 p.m. An alumni tailgate including tables for the “tens” will be held beginning at 1 p.m. in the parking lot directly in front of Callaghan Stadium.

Pre-game festivities also include a Parents Club tailgater and a performance by Blue Monkey Sideshow. Both activities are scheduled from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. in the stadium lot.

Mountain Lion reunion football teams from 1960 and 1985 will be recognized during pre-game activities. A concert featuring After Midnight Project will be held following the game. There is no admission charge for the postgame concert.

Activities are scheduled throughout Homecoming Week for students. A tradition among Greek organizations and other campus groups is the annual competition for Homecoming Royalty ending with the announcement of the winners at halftime during the football game.

Theme for this year is “Disney Movies.” Several contests built around the theme spotlight student creativity and talent including the Lip Sync Contest on Friday, Oct. 15 at 8:30 p.m. in the Main Gym of the Carter Center. Billboards reflecting the theme will also be located around campus.

During Concord’s annual Homecoming Parade, candidates and members of their respective organizations will display floats, banners and costumes as part of the competition. The parade is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 14 at 6 p.m. on Vermillion Street in Athens. Area businesses, clubs and other organizations interested in placing entries in the parade should contact Kati Whittaker at 304-384-5348 or alumni@concord.edu

Longtime Concord employee Sherry Brogan will serve as the parade’s grand marshal. Brogan was chosen to lead the parade in honor of her upcoming retirement, and her 26 years of distinguished service to the University. Currently a member of the financial aid office, she served from 1984-2005 in the development/advancement office and has been a key organizer of the Homer K. Ball Memorial Scholarship Golf Tournament each year.

After the parade a bonfire will be held in the Valley at 6:45 p.m.

The Career Symposium, in its second year at Concord, will be held on Oct. 15. Sponsored by Concord University’s Advancement/Career Services Office, the event will connect current students with alumni. Concord graduates will speak on a wide variety of career options and offer helpful employment tips for undergraduates. The symposium will allow students to talk with alumni and make important business connections that can be used in obtaining internships or jobs.

For more information on the Career Symposium, contact the Advancement/Career Services Office at 304-384-5325 or tmonk@concord.edu

The All-Greek Luncheon will be held at 12 noon on Oct. 16 in the Student Center Ballroom. Guests may pay $5 at the door. Sorority teas and fraternity gatherings will also be held on Oct. 16.

The M.N. Pashion Memorial Bookstore at Concord University announces extended hours during Homecoming. The bookstore will be open on Friday, Oct. 15 from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and on Saturday, Oct. 16 from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. A weeklong Homecoming Sale will be underway Oct. 11-16 with all apparel and imprinted gift items discounted 10 percent.
