Pottery Demonstrations Offered at Concord University

ATHENS – Ceramic Artist David Crane will be at Concord University’s Alexander Fine Arts Center Thursday, Sept. 23, 2010 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. for a reception surrounding his pottery on display in the gallery. He will demonstrate his art form at the Center on Friday, Sept. 24 and Saturday, Sept. 25 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Crane’s ceramic work focuses on dynamic, functional pottery. His designs are inspired by the historic cultural traditions of China, Japan, Europe and Native Americans as well as 19th and 20th century American art.

The artist’s demonstration of his techniques will include a variety of sculpting methods and the firing and glazing of stoneware clay. His salt firing process uses a 2,340-degree kiln to produce distinctive textures.

According to Crane, his “firing method, coupled with atmospheric sensitive glazes, produces pots with a rich range of color and surface variation.” Crane’s ceramic art has been exhibited throughout the United States, and he is a published author on the subject.

Crane’s artist reception and demonstrations are free and open to the public and tickets are not necessary. More information is available at www.ConcordUEvents.com and by calling (304) 384-5101 or emailing BoxOffice@concord.edu.
