Homer K. Ball Memorial Scholarship Golf Tournament Set For June 11
ATHENS, W.Va. - There’s still time to sign up for a morning of golf at Pipestem Resort State Park that benefits Concord University students. Golfers of all skill levels are invited to participate in the annual Homer K. Ball Memorial Scholarship Golf Tournament June 11, 2010.
Ball, a long-time employee and supporter of Concord, played his last round in the 2008 tournament. A 1948 Concord graduate, former sheriff of Mercer County and retired director of the physical plant at Concord, Ball also served as a senator in the West Virginia legislature. He passed away in August 2008. Organizers honored his service and contributions to Concord by renaming the golf tournament in his memory.
Tee time for the tournament is 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start on Pipestem’s 18-hole course. A luncheon will follow in the picnic shelter below the golf course parking lot. The cost is $125 per person, which includes lunch, green fees, cart and tournament souvenirs.
Proceeds go to the Homer K. Ball Scholarship Fund held by the Concord University Foundation. Throughout the years, the tournament has raised more than $200,000 and funded approximately 800 scholarships for Concord students.
Drawings include a chance to win a week’s stay at Sunset Beach, N.C., as well as other golf weekends, free rounds of golf and other prizes. Murphy Insurance will provide a cash prize of $15,000 to the first hole-in-one on the eighth hole. Awards will go to the first and second place winners of the men’s and women’s teams. Awards will also be given for the longest drive and closest-to-the-pin.
Registration deadline is Tuesday, June 8, 2010. To participate in the tournament or sponsorship opportunities contact Sherry Brogan at 304-384-5358 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
