Concord University Division of Fine Arts Presenting Copland’s ‘The Tender Land’

ATHENS, W.Va. - The Concord University Opera Studio will be performing Aaron Copland’s opera “The Tender Land” on Feb. 10, 11 and 12 at 7:30 p.m. in the Main Theatre of the Alexander Fine Arts Center. The theatre is located on the campus of Concord University at 1000 Vermillion St. in Athens.

General admission is $5 with tickets going on sale at 7 p.m. before each performance. Admission is free for Concord faculty, staff and students.

The plot of the opera is set in the American Midwest and offers a unique peek into the isolated world of a rural family, whose oldest daughter has dreams of a much “larger life.” This romantic drama is appropriate for children five years of age and older.

“‘The Tender Land’ is a rarely performed gem of the operatic repertoire because it’s extremely difficult to sing. Our talented student cast has worked tirelessly to learn the score, and they are doing a wonderful job portraying the story,” Joshua Miller, Concord University’s director of vocal studies, said. “This also is a great show to expose children and young singers to the world of opera. It’s one of the few operas that doesn’t involve death or murder, and it’s sung in English!”

Professor Taylor Baldwin will conduct the performances with a chamber orchestra. The production was staged and designed by Miller. More information is available at http://music.concord.edu or by calling (304)384-5301.
