Concord University Hosting First Down Opportunity

Athens, W.Va. - Concord University, along with West Virginia GEAR UP and Upward Bound, will host a free “First Down Opportunity” for McDowell County high school students on Saturday, Sept. 26, 2009 in Athens.

The agenda begins at 2 p.m. with campus tours and sessions focusing on success on the ACT/SAT and in college. Participants will then be treated to free admission to the CU home football game against West Virginia State.
“Our goal is to help make McDowell Countians aware of the fact that higher education is still obtainable and affordable in our economic times... funding sources are available ...for children and parents themselves to attend college,” Terri H. Philpott, with Concord University and the McDowell County Initiative, said.

“Funding has been obtained through Del. Clif Moore and the Council of the Southern Mountains Executive Director Randal Johnson,” she said.

The McDowell County Initiative is an effort to promote higher education opportunities provided by Concord University to area high school students interested in pursuing a post-secondary degree.

The group held a “Kick-off” event at Marquee Cinemas in Welch on Sept. 5 and is planning a “Touchdown” event.

For more information contact Terri Philpott at 304-384-5282 or 800-344-6679 or tphilpott@concord.edu.
