Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony for Concord’s New Picnic and Performance Gazebo Set for Wednesday, May 6th at 1:30 p.m.

Athens, W.Va. – The “Valley” behind Concord University’s Student Center is now graced with a beautiful gazebo that, for years to come, will serve as a place for students to gather, picnic, or watch musical and theatrical performances. Concord will hold a ceremonial ribbon-cutting at the gazebo on Wednesday, May 6th at 1:30 p.m. Speakers will include Dr. Gregory F. Aloia, Concord President, and Wes Prince, 2008-09 Student Government Association president. Students, faculty, staff and the public are invited to attend.

The gazebo is a joint effort between Concord and its Student Government Association, with both paying for a portion of the design and construction of the structure. The gazebo sits just off the northwest corner of the Jerry L. Beasley Student Center, looking out over the lower portion of the Valley. Its open design with a single column in each corner also allows it to be used as a stage for musical and theatrical performances. The hillside above it makes a natural amphitheater.

The Class of 2005 had the original idea for a picnic shelter in the Valley and gifted monies for the project. The Student Government Associations of subsequent classes have worked with Concord administrators on the design, financing and construction of the gazebo. Now that the structure is complete, picnic tables and other items will be added to make it fully functional.

The gazebo was designed by Todd Boggess of E.T. Boggess Architect, Inc. of Princeton, West Virginia. It was constructed by Main Street Builders also of Princeton. Main Street Builders is owned by Adam and Rusty Sarver.
