Box City at CU Friday, May 1

Athens, W.Va. – The Bonner House for Campus-Wide Community Service and the Student Activities Committee at Concord University will host their eighth annual Box City beginning at 8 a.m. on Friday, May 1 and ending at 8 a.m. on Saturday, May 2 to spread awareness for those experiencing homelessness.

The event brings campus organizations together to raise funds for Scottie’s Place, a wilderness camp for children enduring homelessness located near Peterstown.

“The most important goal of this event is to raise awareness for the millions of individuals, including children, who experience homelessness in this country,” said Jesse Call, an AmeriCorps Volunteer in Service to America (VISTA) who is coordinating this year’s event.

“This event serves as a great complement to the other service activities that Concord University has participated in this year including our alternative spring break trip working with homeless agencies in Nashville, Tenn., and the Student Homeless Challenge Project in Washington, D.C.” said Call.

Campus organizations and groups of students make a donation to Scottie’s Place as a “registration fee” for the event. Then, the groups must always have a person stay in their box for the entire 24-hour period.

Call said the event hopes to raise $250 for Scottie’s Place. In addition to the registration fee, donations are being accepted from the public.

Scottie’s Place aims to “empower the homeless child physically, emotionally, and spiritually” by providing outdoor activities for the children. It not only serves West Virginia, but many of the surrounding states including Pennsylvania, Virginia, North Carolina and Washington, D.C.

For more information on how to make a donation, contact the Bonner House at 1-800-344-6679 ext. 6009, 304-384-6009, or volunteer@concord.edu.
