Concord to Host Dinner Theater Wednesday, April 8

Athens, W.Va.-Concord University’s Athens and Beckley campuses have teamed up to host an interactive dinner theater in the Jerry Beasley Student Center at 6 p.m., Wednesday, April 8. The event is sponsored by Concord’s recreational and tourism management program and Beckley’s theater class, lead by Karen Vuranch—theater professor and playwright.

Win, Lose or Die!, written and produced by Vuranch, is a murder mystery with three main characters starring on the popular game show Friendly Feud. One of the contestants, however, has committed a crime. Audience members are then chosen to help solve the mystery.

“This is what makes this activity so different; people from the audience participate alongside the actors and take part in the plot,” Dr. Susan M. Williams, assistant professor of the RTM program, said. “They won’t know their roles when they are first chosen but they will help in solving the murder mystery.”

In the past, CU’s RTM program had a culinary component, Williams said. Now, however, the RTM program does not have a culinary component, and she wanted a way to “resurrect” the dinner theater experience.

“I was looking for a project for class, and I knew Karen was a well-known East Coast playwright,” Williams said. “Through this experience, the RTM students will work with the caterer, decide on the menu, produce the play and invite the media. They get the experience of planning an event.”

Williams not only encourages students to attend the dinner theater but invites the community as well.

“This is an opportunity to do something different, and it’s not offered anywhere else around here,” she said. “This event is an opportunity to bridge the gap between the college campus and the community. In addition, it’s interactive, mysterious … and, fun!”

Tickets are $25 per person and reservations may be made with Dr. Williams at 1-304-384-6026 or swilliams@concord.edu. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Concord Daycare Center.
