Athens, W.Va. – The United Way of the Virginias and Concord University are pleased to announce the formation of the first Student United Way in West Virginia at Concord University.

The Concord Student United Way is one of 14 in the country. Student United Way is a student-led community change organization whose primary functions are to: give, advocate and volunteer in the areas of education, income and health; help students grow as leaders and connect to the community; and build lasting relationships with each other and the United Way organization.

Student United Ways work in coordination with local United Ways like the United Way of the Virginias. The Concord Student United Way is working closely with the United Way of the Virginias and is in charge of the United Way campaign at Concord University. The money raised by the Student United Way (unless designated otherwise) will be used for community impact projects in the areas of education, income and health to be developed and executed by the Concord Student United Way. An example of a community impact project is to mentor and increase the reading skills of children as part of a dropout prevention strategy.

“Michelle Williams, executive director of the United Way of the Virginias, knew people involved with student organizations at Concord,” stated Mitch Tuggle, a sophomore at Concord from Peterstown majoring in English. “Last fall she spoke to some students who were involved with the Appalachian Leadership and Education Foundation, and I was one of those students. I decided to help, so a small group elected officers, and I was elected president of the Student United Way. Last semester we sponsored a talent show and held raffles to raise money for the United Way, and this semester we will plan some fundraisers but we haven’t finalized plans.”
