Joseph Lester chosen as Concord’s 2007 Outstanding Accounting Senior

Athens, W.Va. – Joseph Lester of Bluefield was selected as Concord’s 2007 Outstanding Accounting Senior by the West Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants (WVSCPAs). He was presented the award, along with $250 at a meeting of the southern chapter of the Society. The Society limits the awards to one per college or university.

“It’s a big and well-known organization,” Lester said. “Most CPAs are members of the Society.”

In order to be selected, Lester had to have a 3.0 in his accounting courses along with a 3.0 average overall. He also had to be nominated by a member of the Concord accounting faculty.

Lester mailed his reference and an essay in response to a request from the Society. He said that when he did this, he didn’t expect to win.

“I remember the night I got the letter back,” he recalled. “I got home from work and I saw the letter on the table. I brushed it off until the next morning because I didn’t think it would be good news. Yet, when I read it, I was ecstatic, and I couldn’t believe it!”

He said that this recognition will help him with future opportunities.

“The award will result in exposure for me with those in the profession,” he said. “That same Society distributes newsletters that are mailed to all accounting firms in West Virginia, which will get my name out there more.”

Dr. Kendra Boggess, chair for the division of business, said, “The Division of Business encourages students to take part in local and regional professional organizations associated with their business majors. The recognition the WVSCPA offers through this award is a wonderful example of the encouragement professional organizations can offer their members and potential members. This award recognized Joey Lester for the effort he has made in developing good accounting skills while at Concord. This kind of recognition has the potential to differentiate Joseph’s skills and abilities on the resume, that very important document, from other accounting majors across the state and could be the difference in an employer’s perceptions of his skills and abilities.”

The award was given in October 2007.
