“Street Noise” on Exhibition in Arthur Butcher Gallery at CU through Friday, March 14

Athens, W.Va. – “Street Noise” is on exhibition in the Arthur Butcher Gallery at Concord University through Friday, March 14. A reception will be held Friday, March 7 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The show features black and white photographs of musicians from around the world taken by Dr. Timothy L. Mainland, professor of music and division chairperson of fine arts; Dr. Joseph T. “Joe” Manzo, professor of geography; and Mr. Fernando Porras, instructor in art.

The pictures were taken using both digital and 35mm technologies. There are 40 photographs in the show. A “busker” is, according to the dictionary, an itinerant entertainer, or, as Dr. Manzo has noted, another name for the exhibit.

Dr. Manzo said that, “I have a son who is a musician … and a soft spot in my heart for them … so the faces and stories of musicians are interesting to me. The photographs feature a combination of geography, the graphic arts, and music,” he continued. “Our point was to capture the emotion of the musicians, the faces … the fingers, and a sense of place. This is an exhibit that speaks to the arts, ‘the words’ and the geography of global music.”

The Arthur Butcher Gallery is located in the Alexander Fine Arts Center at Concord University. Gallery hours are noon to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. Special viewings are available upon request.
