Concord University Represented at WVU Annual Literature Symposium for Undergraduate Students

Athens, W.Va. – Two papers written by Concord University English majors during the spring 2007 semester were presented at the 16th Annual Literature Symposium for Undergraduate Students, sponsored by the West Virginia University Department of English in Morgantown, on February 16, 2008.

Corrie McKee of Nitro presented her paper entitled “Feminine Power in Dickens’s Hard Times: An In-Depth Characterization of Sissy Jupe” during a symposium session that focused on the topic “Making the Female Self.” Corrie will graduate from CU in May 2008 with a B.A. in English with emphases in public relations and journalism.

Jonathan Bradley of Peterstown presented his paper entitled “Imagination in Flames: Dickens’s Use of Fire Imagery in Hard Times” during a symposium session that focused on the topic “Images of Fiction.” A May 2007 graduate of Concord University, Jonathan is currently pursuing an M.A. degree in English at Radford University.

The papers presented at the 2008 WVU Undergraduate Literature Symposium were selected on the basis of a statewide writing competition administered by the WVU English Department. Any literary paper written by an undergraduate at a West Virginia college or university during the 2007 calendar year was eligible for submission to the competition. The fifteen papers selected for presentation at the symposium represented Fairmont University, Shepherd University, University of Charleston, West Liberty State College, and West Virginia University, as well as Concord University.
