CU to Host Carillon Concert, Thursday, October 11

Athens, W.Va. – The Artist Lecture Series presents a carillon concert on Thursday, October 11 at 7 p.m., featuring Mr. Gerald Martindale, carillonneur from Toronto, Canada.

This concert is in honor of the 10th anniversary of the Marsh Memorial Carillon. The bells were dedicated on July 30, 1997, and they were installed by October 10, 1997, when over 300 people gathered to hear the inaugural concert by R. Robin Austin, carillonneur at Princeton University.

Mr. Martindale was appointed carillonneur of the Metropolitan United Church of Toronto in 1997. He studied carillon with Dr. Sydney Shep, former carillonneur of the University of Toronto. He earned a Bachelor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Windsor and holds Associate Diplomas in Organ from the Royal Conservatory of Music of Toronto and the Royal Canadian College of Organists. He has performed in Ireland, England, Holland, Belgium, France, Switzerland, Germany, Denmark, and Sweden. This is his third visit to β€œthe campus beautiful.”

He will be performing various selections including hymns, folk songs and classical arrangements.

Guests are invited to bring folding chairs or blankets to the campus to enjoy the music. Programs will be available in two places--Marsh Hall stairwell, and Alexander Fine Arts Center lobby.
