Ragtime & Jazz Musicians to Headline Annual Alumni Banquet at CU, Friday, May 18

Athens, W.Va. - Their music filled the space of Paul Theater two years ago, and once again, Concord welcomes Pianafiddle for another smashing performance when the Concord University Alumni Association hosts its annual banquet Friday, May 18, at 6 p.m. The banquet will be held in the Concord University Ballroom.

Pianafiddle is a duet grown from the vines of Lynn Wright’s ragtime and jazz piano playing and Adam DeGraff’s collaboration of classical violin and traditional fiddling. The couple’s diverse style leads them from Bach to bluegrass, classical to Celtic: “If we like it, we play it.”

Wright began his journey upon the white and black keys under the guidance of his mother, a Peabody graduate and concert pianist. At age 13, he began playing in the “dark halls of nightclub bands where written music was not needed, and could not be seen even if it was.” He paid his way through college by performing live country music on television, and composing various types of music in the studio. He has taught at the University of Denver and Western State College in Gunnison, Colo. Though a retired teacher, Wright knows well that a musician has no retirement.

Degraff, a native of Chicago, Illinois, began playing violin at the age of 4. His passion for violin led him onto the stage as a playing part of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago while he was just in high school. This opened doors to being co-concertmaster of the Civic Orchestra while he attended Northwestern University. Now, Degraff and his family resides in Lewisburg where he maintains a large studio for violin and fiddle students.

Ticket prices are $20, and reservations are requested. For further information or to make reservations call 1-304-384-6056 or 384-5348 or e-mail alumni@concord.edu.
