Jim Miller Retires from CU Board of Governors

Athens, W.Va. - Concord University Board of Governors Chair, Mr. R.T. "Ted" Rogers, presented a plaque to outgoing member, Mr. James "Jim" Miller, on Tuesday, September 12, thanking him for his service to Concord.

"Before serving on this board, I was secretary of the Concord Foundation, and we had only $80,000. (the foundation now has an endowment of $22 million). I started my studies at Concord in 1958 and finished in 1968 … schools were tougher in those days!" he stated, as guests chuckled with him.

Mr. Miller, a 1968 graduate of Concord, is vice president, financial services, with First Community Bank, and served on the Concord University Foundation Board of Directors for many years. He also served on governing boards for Concord for more than 15 years, including the Concord College Board of Advisors and the Concord University Board of Governors.

In 1991, the Concord University Alumni Association presented the Outstanding Alumnus of the Year award to Mr. Miller.

Miller, a native of Princeton, has been active in the Princeton Community Hospital Foundation, the Economic Education Foundation of Southern West Virginia, the Princeton Rotary Club, the Bluestone Convention and Visitors Bureau, the West Virginia Bankers Association, Junior Achievement of Mercer County, the Princeton Mercer County Chamber of Commerce and other civic and community organizations. He and his wife, Sandra, reside in Princeton and have two children and six grandchildren.

"Jim suggested that we establish our scholars of distinction scholarship program, to bring students with high academic achievements to Concord, and the program, during the past 15 years, has brought a remarkable group of students to this campus," stated Dr. Jerry Beasley, president of Concord.

"Jim Miller has been a friend and source of personal inspiration," Beasley continued. "His leadership has left indelible marks on Concord and on our community. Many recall that he also chaired the campaign that built the Princeton Health Center, one of the sparkling gems of our area. Jim is both a wise and witty man whose continuing presence will remain a blessing to his friends across the region. We will remain long grateful for what he means to us all."

CONCORD UNIVERSITY NOTES: In general, the intent of Senate Bill 653 and 703 is to diversify and expand the economy of the state, increase the competitiveness of the state’s workforce and the availability of professional expertise by increasing the number of college degrees produced to the level of the national average and significantly improve the level of adult functional literacy.

Effective July 1, 2001, an institutional board of governors was established as required by SB 653 and 703. The board of governors powers and duties generally include: determining controlling supervisions and managing the financial, business and education policies and affairs of Concord, developing a master plan, demonstrating how the master plan will be used, developing goals and missions, and other items as directed by the legislation.

The board of governors is comprised of 12 people including: nine members appointed by the governor, a full-time member of the faculty, a member of the student body and a member of Concord’s classified employees.

Members of Concord’s governing board are: Dr. Deborah Akers, Princeton, W.Va.; James M. Brown, Beckley, W.Va.; Eugene V. Fife, Charlottesville, Va.; J. Franklin Long, Bluefield, W.Va.; Wayne Meisel, Princeton, N.J.; James L. Miller, Princeton, W.Va.; R. T. “Ted” Rogers, board chair, Hinton, W.Va.; Margaret Sayre, board secretary, Beckley, W.Va.; student representative, Jesse Call; faculty representative, Darrin Martin; and classified staff representative, Amy Pitzer. There is currently one vacancy on the board; Mr. Miller's departure will result in a second vacancy.
