Concord University Students Attend Conference in Pa.
Athens, W.Va. - Seven McNair Scholars represented Concord University at the 14th Annual McNair Summer Research Conference at The Pennsylvania State University in late July: Laura Canton (Bel Air, Md.), Jodie Cox (Sophia), Shelley Drake (Rosedale, Va.), Patience Hall (Bluefield), Amanda Lawrence (Princeton), Daniel Puckett (Princeton) and Jessica Puckett (Princeton). Conference participants enjoyed a variety of scholar research presentations from more than 25 institutions. Four of these came from the Concord delegation:
Laura Canton (Poster) – “The Use of Macroinvertebrates as a Biological Indicator to Determine the Water Quality of an Urban West Virginia Stream” (Supervising Faculty: Dr. Tom Ford, Assistant Professor of Biology)
Shelley Drake (Poster) – “Bioactivity of Extracts Prepared from Hieracium venosum” (Supervising Faculty: Dr. Darrell Crick, Assistant Professor of Chemistry)
Daniel Puckett (Paper) – “Comparison of Antimicrobial Activity of Extracts Prepared from Ambrosia trifida and Ambrosia artemisiifolia” (Supervising Faculty: Dr. Darrell Crick, Assistant Professor of Chemistry and Dr. Darla Wise, Associate Professor of Biology)
Jessica Puckett (Poster) – “Screening of Sorrel (oxalis spp) for Cytotoxic, Antioxidant, and Antibacterial Activity” (Supervising Faculty: Dr. Darla Wise, Associate Professor of Biology)
Participants also attended a graduate school fair as well as pre-conference workshops focusing on graduate admissions. The Pennsylvania State University is one of more than 150 institutions nationwide that offer application incentives for McNair Scholars.
