Faculty Member Named VP for Student Affairs at Concord

Athens, W.Va. - Dr. John David Smith has been named vice president for student affairs and dean of students at Concord University, and he assumes his new duties today.

Dr. Smith is a graduate of Concord and has graduate degrees from WVU, Marshall, University of Toledo, and DePaul University. He holds graduate degrees in social work, psychology, and law and has served the University as professor and director of the Social Work Program, coordinator of the Legal Studies Program, primary investigator for community-based funded research, and chair of the Division of Social Sciences during his eight years at Concord.

Jesse Call, a student from Pocahontas, Va., and representative for students on Concord’s Board of Governors, said, “Dr. Smith will serve as a fine advocate and representative for the students, and I believe he will do an excellent job in this position.”

Sean Noland, from Daniels, serves as vice president for the Student Government Association. He said, “The SGA is very pleased about the appointment. The consensus among the student leadership is that Professor Smith is very well qualified and dedicated to the University and its students. Not only do we feel that he will be a good advocate for students, but that he will inspire the students to be their own advocates.”

“I am confident he will bring innovative and creative ideas to the service of Concord students,” stated Concord President Jerry Beasley.
