Concord to Host Alumni Banquet, Friday, May 12

Athens, W.Va. - The Concord University Alumni Association’s annual celebration and banquet will be held on Friday, May 12, 2006.

The Association will host a dedication of the Alumni Legacy Walk, present the Association’s annual awards, and host a special guest speaker.

The Legacy Walk has been a long-awaited dream. Hundreds of alumni and friends purchased bricks to honor the legacy that they and others have left to the Campus Beautiful. Proceeds from the sale of bricks will assist in funding a scholarship for dependents of Concord graduates. Alumni Association representatives and University representatives will be on hand to officially dedicate the walk. The dedication will be held under the breezeway between the J. Frank Marsh Library and Marsh Hall at 5 p.m. The public is invited to attend, and refreshments will be served after the ceremony in the Student Center Television Lounge on the second floor.

A trio of dedicated alumni will be honored this year by the Alumni Association.

Nelrose Richards Price ‘46, registrar emeritus of Concord, will be honored as the Golden Alumnus for 2006. The Golden Alumnus honor recognizes those who dedicated at least 25 years of service to Concord.

George W. Keatley ‘58, a retired Mercer County educator and principal, will be recognized as Alumnus of the Year for 2006. Keatley serves as the vice president of the Pine Trees Chapter of the Concord University Alumni Association. He has been a faithful supporter of Concord, and he along with his colleagues have worked to promote and build the Chapter.

Victor Grigoraci ‘64 will receive the Outstanding Alumnus Award for 2006. Grigoraci has built a distinguished accounting career. He presently serves as treasurer of the City of Charleston. He has worked as an Internal Revenue Service agent and for several international accounting firms. He currently serves as chief operating officer for Grigoraci, Trainer, Wright & Paterno, an accounting and consulting firm.

Virginia Senator Creigh Deeds ‘80 will serve as the featured speaker for the banquet. Deeds represents the Virginia counties of Alleghany, Bath and Nelson and the cities of Buena Vista, Covington and Charlottesville. He also represents most of Albemarle County, southern Rockbridge County and one precinct in Buckingham. He serves on the following Senate standing committees: agriculture, conservation and natural resources, transportation, privileges and elections, and rehabilitation and social services.

Senator Deeds graduated from Bath County High School in 1976. After completing undergraduate work at Concord College, he received his law degree from Wake Forest University in 1984. Currently he is an attorney in private practice. His public service career began in 1987 when he was elected Bath County commonwealth’s attorney. In 1991 he ran successfully for the House of Delegates, where he served for 10 years before being elected to the Virginia Senate in 2001.

He has received the Leadership in Public Policy Award from The Nature Conservancy, and the Preservation Alliance of Virginia named him Delegate of the Year. He also was awarded the Warren Stambaugh Award from Virginians United Against Crime.

The Linda Fink Service Award will also be presented to an individual who has provided exceptional community service to the area.

The classes of 1956 and 1981 will celebrate their fiftieth and twenty-fifth reunions respectively. The members of the class of 1956 will receive complementary meals.

Cost for the banquet and reception is $18 a person. The Legacy Walk dedication will be at 5 p.m. under the breezeway between the J.
