Concord University Announces Faculty/Staff Additions and Promotions at Fall Opening Ceremony

Athens, W.Va.-Dr. Dean Turner, vice president and academic dean, announced faculty additions and promotions at the opening ceremony of Concord University on Thursday, August 18. The opening ceremony was held in the Main Theater of the Alexander Fine Arts Center.

The following persons joined the University as full-time faculty:

Dr. Jonathan M. Berkey joined the faculty as an assistant professor of history. He received his B.A. from Gettysburg College, and his M.A. and Ph.D. from The Pennsylvania State University. He comes to Concord from Avondale, Pa.

Mr. Glen M. Blankenship joined the faculty in January 2005 as a tennis coach and instructor in mathematics. He received his B.S. from Concord University, and previously served as an adjunct professor. He is a resident of Athens, W.Va.

Mr. H. David Campbell joined the faculty as an assistant professor of health and physical education. He received his B.S. from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, and his M.A. from East Carolina University. He comes to Concord from Pikeville, Ky.

Ms. Paula H. Elliott joined the faculty as an assistant professor of education. She received her B.A. from Bluefield State College, and her M.A. from Marshall University. She has previously served as an adjunct professor. She is a resident of Princeton, W.Va.

Dr. Thomas B. Ford joined the faculty as an assistant professor of biology. He received his B.A. from Connecticut College, and his Ph.D. from Indiana University. He comes to Concord from Lock Haven, Pa.

Dr. Kelly R. Hudson joined the faculty as an assistant professor of music. She received her B.A. from Luther College, her M.M. from Colorado State University, and her D.M.A. from The University of Iowa. She comes to Concord from Rochester, N.Y.

Ms. Susan Martin-Williams will join the faculty in January 2006 as an assistant professor of recreation and tourism management. She received her B.A. from Concord University, her M.A. from Marshall University, and is expecting to receive her Ph.D. in May 2006 from West Virginia University. She served as a full-time professor in 2002-2003, and has also previously served as an adjunct professor. She will come to Concord from Morgantown, W.Va.

Dr. Anita V. Reynolds joined the faculty as an assistant professor of education. She received a B.S. from Roanoke College, a B.S. from Bluefield College, her M.S. from Old Dominion University, and her Ed.D. from the University of Virginia. She is a resident of North Tazewell, Va.

Mr. Robert D. Rhodes joined the faculty as an assistant professor of psychology. He received his B.S. from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, a M.A. from Hollins College, a M.S. from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, where he is expected to earn his Ph.D. this year. He comes to Concord from Alachua, Fla.

Dr. Anneke H. Walters joined the faculty as an assistant professor of biology. She received her B.S. from the University of Stellenbosch, and her M.S. and Ph.D. from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. She is a resident of Blacksburg, Va.

The following promotions were also announced. Those with a star (*) next to their name also received tenure:

Dr. Kendra Boggess, Professor of Business

Dr. Darrell Crick, Probationary Assistant Professor of Chemistry

Ms. Carmen Durrani, Associate Professor of Foreign Languages

Dr. Kathryn Liptak, Professor of Education*

Dr. Tracy Luff, Probationary Assistant Professor of Sociology

Dr. Paul Kane, Associate Professor of English*

Dr. Tonya McKinley, Associate Professor of Biology (effective Fall 2004)

Dr. Andrew Necessary, Associate Professor of Music*

Mr. Fernando Porras, Probationary Instructor in Art

Dr. Cheryl Trull, Associate Professor of Education*

Dr. Sarah Whittaker, Associate Professor of Social Work*

Mr. Robert Whittinghill, Professor of Physical Education

Dr. Christopher Ziemnowicz, Professor of Business

The following new assignments were also announced:

Dr. Rodney Klein, Director, McNair Scholars Program

Dr. Danette Light, Director of Assessment

Mr. Jacob Ryan, Head Athletic Trainer/Assistant Professor of Athletic Training

Dr. Jane Smith, Associate Dean

Dr. George Towers, Chair, Division of Social Sciences

Changes were also made among Concord University’s staff.

The following are new staff hires:

Mr. Jeff Shumaker has been named the new director of the physical plant. The native of Princeton earned his mechanical engineering degree from the West Virginia Institute of Technology.

Andrea Webb joined the staff of the business office as an accounting assistant I. She is a Concord University graduate and resides in Princeton.

Catherine Matherly will join the staff of the president’s office in September as the assistant to the president. She comes to Concord from Bluefield College.

Matthew McGraw joined the staff of the admissions office as a Counselor. He is a resident of Hinton.

The President of the University, Dr. Jerry Beasley, joined Turner in wishing the new faculty and staff a successful year.

“I wish you all a very good year. I’m excited about what we are about this year, and I’m really excited to have the opportunity to meet our new colleagues. I think they are going to enrich our lives and this institution,” shared Beasley at the ceremony.

Turner sent best wishes to the new and returning faculty at the ceremony. “I wish you best wishes for personal health and wealth, professional development and recognition, bright and enthusiastic students, and a year of many celebrations. Welcome to the new year,” he concluded.
