Athens, W.Va. – The 19th annual Athens-Concord Town Social will be Sunday, August 14, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on the front lawn of the Concord University campus. Enjoy the music, games and free food with your friends and family!
Children will be able to enjoy a wide variety of games and win really cool prizes. The Concord University football team, under the leadership of football Coach Greg Quick, will be challenging children with horse shoes, ring toss and other lively games of chance.
Come early to the “Campus Beautiful” and listen to the Joseph Franklin Marsh Sr., Memorial Carillon. A program of music consisting of popular hymns will begin at 12:30 p.m. and end at 12:45 p.m. The bells will peal at 1:15 p.m., adding to the excitement of the Town Social, and then play another program of music at 5 p.m., ending at 5:30 p.m.
Enjoy old-time and Appalachian music as Midnight Ramblers perform from 1:30 p.m. to 2:40 p.m. Tap your toes to the tunes of Billy Goat Gruff, featuring several Concord players, performing from 3:15 p.m. to 4 p.m. And, wrapping up, enjoy Sargus. They will play from 4:15 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Joe Lively will again serve as emcee.
The Town of Athens and Concord University jointly plan the social, which is traditionally held on the second Sunday of each August. The goal of the Town Social is to provide an opportunity for residents of the Town of Athens and surrounding areas, the Concord community and visitors to socialize in a small-town setting -- 600-800 guests typically attend.
