Concord Psych Students Win at Tri-State Conference

Athens, W.Va. – Eight students from Concord University’s psychology department attended the 14th Annual Tri-state Psychology Conference held at West Virginia University in Morgantown on April 22 and won first place in a “Psychology Jeopardy” competition. This was the first year for the Jeopardy-style competition.

The championship team consisted of: Shawn Carter from Oak Hill, Aaron Hellems from Mt. Nebo and Andrea Kibler from St. Albans.

“These students beat a team from Carnegie Mellon University to win the championship as well as teams from Frostburg State University, Fairmont State University, Marshall University, and Marietta College in earlier rounds,” noted Assistant Professor of Psychology Christina M. Rock, one of two advisors for the group. “This was the first annual competition. This competition is now going to be a regular part of this conference. Unfortunately, we will be unable to defend our title next year as we will be hosting the 2006 conference, and it would be unfair for the hosting school to answer the questions they write!”

Students presented posters and papers at the conference.

Those presenting posters included: Adam Boland from State College, Pa., and Shawn Carter from Oak Hill presenting “Role of Contextual Cues in Voluntary Alcohol Consumption”; Kira Bailey from Huntington, W.Va., presenting “Effects of Violence in Video Games on Aggression in College Students”; Mandy Sanderson from Ballard, Krasimira Shapkarova from Plovdiv, Bulgaria, and Alia Zaro from Charlottesville, Va., presenting “Nobody Cares: Influence of Social Anxiety and Gender on Helping Behavior”; and Andrea Kibler from St. Albans presenting “Treatment of Binge Eating Disorder: A Review of the Research.”

Shawn Carter from Oak Hill was the presenter and primary author for “Contextual Conditioned Inhibition as a Treatment for Classically Conditioned Fear.” Secondary authors were Krasimira Shapkarova from Bulgaria, Samantha Carter from Princeton and Harry McCoy from Charleston, S.C.

Jamie Rice from Welch also attended the conference and Assistant Professor of Psychology Rodney L. Klein Faculty also served as advisor for the students.

“We began psychology research team meetings in 2003-2004. Most of the students who presented at the conference were involved in our department research team meetings. Students who participate in conferences like this and perform such research are more likely to be admitted for graduate study,” concluded Professor Rock.

Concord students accepted into doctoral programs in psychology include: Samantha Carter from Princeton who was accepted into the Behavior and Neuroscience Ph.D. program at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, Ill., Shawn Carter from Oak Hill who was accepted into the Clinical Psychology Ph.D. program at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, Ill., and Petya Demireva from Bulgaria who was accepted into the Clinical Psychology Ph.D. program at University of Ohio in Athens, Ohio.
