Need a Job? Hone Your Skills and Make the Right Contacts at Career-Related Events

Athens, W.Va. – In search of a job? You may benefit from one of the following events. Concord University’s career services office is either hosting or working in conjunction with other organizations to facilitate these job-search or career-related activities. The events are open to the public.

“With the economy still not at full speed, soon-to-be college graduates and even some college alumni are looking for any and all ways that they may secure employment,” noted Director of Career Services Tammy Monk. “There are several upcoming job fairs in which May graduates and alumni are encouraged to participate. Job fairs are a great venue to learn about the types of jobs for which hiring is occurring and the numbers of jobs available. In many cases, it is a true reality check for what's happening in terms of employment opportunities, particularly at the local level. Participants should be dressed professionally and have plenty of copies of their resume if they choose to attend and be competitive.”

Monday, March 21, 2 p.m. – College Center State Room

David Burch with Bertek Pharmaceuticals will share information on how you might land a job as a pharmaceutical sales representative. Sponsored by career services.

Wednesday, March 23, 9 a.m.–4 p.m. – College Center Ballroom

The SGA (Student Government Association) is sponsoring a career fair and internship program. Watch for further information or contact a SGA representative.

Thursday, March 24 – College Center near the Bookstore

Dollywood will have a representative on campus recruiting for summer internships and probably some full-time opportunities. Hosted by career services.

Thursday, March 24, 4 p.m. – College Center Subway Sides

“Planning For Your Financial Future” presented by Cole Malcolm with Mass Mutual. If a 401K is included in your job offer, do you know what that means? If you have to be vested in a retirement plan, what does that mean? Have your basic questions answered about financial terms and see the value of starting your financial planning at age 22 as opposed to 30. Hosted by career services.

Thursday, March 24, 7 p.m. – College Center Ballroom

Former Concord student and student-athletes will be sharing their career success stories. Come and get advice on how to achieve your personal success. Co-sponsored by the athletic department and career services.

Monday, March 28, 7 p.m. – College Center Ballroom

Greek Alumni Panel – Former Concord Greeks will share their stories on how being a Greek in college has influenced their life and success after leaving college. Co-sponsored by the IFC (Inter-fraternity Council), Pan-Hellenic Council and career services.

Wednesday, March 30, 9 a.m.–3 p.m. - Bluefield State College Gymnasium

Approximately 50 employers will be on hand to talk with prospective full-time job candidates at a career fair. More information will be available in career services. This event is co-sponsored by Bluefield State College and Concord University.

Thursday, March 31, 7 p.m. – College Center Subway Sides

“Networking Your Way to Success” presented by Amber Sellers with Enterprise Rent-A-Car. Brought to you by career services.

Wednesday, April 6, 7 p.m. – College Center Ballroom

“Goal Getting” presented by Patrick Combs from San Diego. At recent college presentations, Patrick has attracted hundreds (and even thousands) of students to hear his message. We all can set goals, but Patrick will share with us how to “get” those goals. Patrick made $80,000 right out of college and he’ll share with you how he accomplished that!! Brought to you by career services.

Thursday, April 14, 12 Noon-5 p.m. – Holiday Inn, Bristol, Virginia

An interstate career fair co-sponsored by 16 colleges and universities from West Virginia, Virginia, Tennessee, and North Carolina. There should be approximately 100 companies in attendance. Further information will be available in the career services office.

Career services is also working with the athletic department, the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association), and the WVIAC (West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference), which will have representatives on campus working with student-athletes on resumes and job searches in March.

"Our vision for each student-athlete is a Concord University diploma that signifies all the preparation necessary for success in life and an athletic experience that develops the self-esteem and confidence necessary to put the preparation into action,” stated Athletic Director Greg Quick. “Part of the challenge in transitioning from vision to reality is motivating our student-athletes to take ownership of their future-now not later. The events that the athletic department has partnered in with Tammy Monk, director of career services at Concord University, the WVIAC, and the NCAA are aimed at helping each individual find purpose and help them to develop a plan of action aimed at the realization of their life's goals. Intercollegiate athletics and the associated experiences of each student-athlete should be a portal to a fulfilling future."

Concord University students and alumni can register with the career services office at www.monstertrak.com. Click on “Students/Alumni,” then “West Virginia” then “Concord University.” Then you may register and upload your resume by clicking on “Register/Upload Resume.” Complete the form with the requested information. To be registered with Concord University career services, you do not need to upload your resume, but if you’re searching for an internship or full-time employment, you are encouraged to do so.
