Concord to Host Formal Convocation to Celebrate Name Change, Tuesday, October 26

Athens, W.Va. – Concord University President Jerry L. Beasley would like to invite students, faculty, staff and the community to a special convocation honoring the recent change in name to Concord University.

The convocation will be held Tuesday, October 26, at 11 a.m. in the Main Theater of the Alexander Fine Arts Center. Eleven o’clock classes at the institution will be canceled to afford students, faculty and staff the opportunity to attend this special ceremony.

Featured speaker will be Dr. Constantine W. Curris, president of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU). Following the remarks by Dr. Curris, the University will continue the special ceremony with music and other activities.

Dr. Curris is the fourth chief executive for AASCU--a national association of over 400 public colleges and universities, including Concord. Curris is a strong advocate for public higher education and its students and a proponent of the qualitative strengthening of higher education institutions in order to meet public needs and expectations in the twenty-first century. Curris, a Kentucky native, has served as president at three universities: Murray State University in Kentucky for ten years, the University of Northern Iowa for twelve years, and Clemson University in South Carolina for over four years until his selection as AASCU’s president. His legacy on these campuses has led to two buildings being named for him, the Murray State Student Center and the Northern Iowa Business Building. He served higher education in West Virginia at West Virginia Institute of Technology, Marshall University and the West Virginia Board of Education.

“The principle purpose of [the convocation] is to encourage our Concord community to begin thinking collectively about new models of progress—to celebrate our past, but to project dreams for our future,” said Concord University President, Dr. Jerry Beasley.
