Earn Money While You Learn: May 21 Deadline for American History and Special Education Teachers to Register in Summer Program

Athens, W.Va. - Concord College and Glenville State College offer American History teachers, grades 4, 5, 9 and 11, and special education teachers a residential summer program that offers some pretty amazing benefits, including: a $1,500 stipend [that’s $125/day] for 12 days of intense excitement, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays for four consecutive weeks, beginning Tuesday, June 22 and ending Thursday, July 15; six graduate credit hours from Concord College; and the opportunity to work with other American history teachers, college instructors, and guest presenters from around the nation.

This is the second summer for this program, offered under a U.S. Department of Education grant awarded for American history teachers in “RESAs I and IV” [select areas in southern West Virginia] under the auspices of Concord College and Glenville State College. The program’s goals are ambitious. They include: helping to restore American history to its proper place in our schools; improving student appreciation and enjoyment [once again] of the American history you teach; developing strategies to help your students learn and understand more, write well, conduct research – and maybe even publish original work; strengthening the link between what you do, what your students learn, and what their parents expect from you – and them; and designing the kind of instruction that encourages students to write, to think, to understand, to create, and to become self-learners.

We invite you to invest a portion of your summer in an experience you’ll never regret or forget,” stated Dr. William A. O’Brien, program director.

Deadline for registration is Friday, May 21.

For more information and a registration packet, contact Dr. O’Brien at the Concord College Beckley Center, 219 N. Kanawha Street, Beckley, 1-304-255-0793 or obrien@concord.edu.
