Roth Scholarship Competition Results Announced
Athens, W.Va. - Stephen Hill, a second-year Concord College student from Belle, W.Va., has been awarded the David S. Roth Memorial Scholarship for the 2004-2005 academic year. Hill, who is pursuing a B.A. in English, with an emphasis in writing and journalism, won the $500 award in a writing competition judged by a panel of Concord College faculty members.
Selected on the basis of their outstanding writing skills, the finalists in this year's competition represented a wide variety of academic majors and geographic backgrounds. First runner-up was Jessica Bennett (business management) of Lookout, W.Va. and second runner-up went to Shawn Carter (psychology) of Oak Hill, W.Va. Additional finalists included Jennifer Crowe (social work) of Princeton, W.Va.; Megan Delisi (education, art and English) of New Martinsville, W.Va.; Kelly Holdren (political science) of St. Albans, W.Va.; Jillian Jones (secondary education, English language arts) of Cool Ridge, W.Va.; Cori Pennell (geography) of Athens, W.Va.; Malinda Shrewsbury (psychology) of Princeton, W.Va.; and Sudeep Simkhada (mathematics) of Kathmandu, Nepal.
The Roth Scholarship honors the memory of Professor David S. Roth, who taught English and journalism at Concord College from 1969 until 1986. Dr. Roth's wide-ranging interests and enthusiasm for teaching writing inspired his family and colleagues to establish the David S. Roth Memorial Scholarship Fund.
