Concord Collegiate Singers and Conchords in Concert: Performances in Beckley and Athens

Athens, W.Va. - Fifty-five Concord College students who make up the Collegiate Singers and ConChords will join together to perform two upbeat, diverse concerts.

The first show will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 25, at the Beckley Presbyterian Church. The second show will be presented at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 27, in the Main Auditorium of the Alexander Fine Arts Center.

In addition to the two concerts, the choir will be performing at the 11 a.m. worship service at the Beckley United Methodist Temple, on Sunday, April 25.

Audiences will be entertained with music of African and African-American influence, including Paul Baslers and Missa Kenya, with selections of “Swing Low Sweet Chariot,” and “When the Saints Go Marching In” during the first half of the program.

The second half of the show will take a different turn as the choir sings selections of music from the 16th through the 21st centuries such as a madrigal, a psalm setting, a German folk song, a spiritual, and several pieces by contemporary American composers.

The Collegiate Singers and Conchords will be accompanied by percussionists Tim Simms and Dr. Pete Zambito and also by Dr. Andrew Necessary on trombone, Dr. Jane Smith on piano, and Dr. Tim Mainland on string bass.

All performances are free and open to the public.
