Concord Computer Science Students Rank in Regional Contest

Athens, W. Va. – A team of students from Concord College tied for 20th place in the International Collegiate Programming Contest sponsored by the Association of Computing Machinery. Concord’s team was one of 160 teams that competed on Saturday, November 8. The contest was held at Radford University, which was one of 10 testing sites in the mid-Atlantic region.

Students from colleges and universities throughout New Jersey, eastern Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, the District of Columbia, Virginia, West Virginia, and North Carolina competed against each other.

Miroslav Stoyanov, a senior from Varna, Bulgaria, Stephan Mitchev, a junior from Varna, Bulgaria and Kiril Angov, a sophomore from Stara Zagora, Bulgaria, represented Concord College in the programming contest.

The students solved eight different problems requiring both mathematical and computer skills.

The ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest is an activity of the Association for Computing Machinery that provides college students with an opportunity to demonstrate and sharpen their problem-solving and computing skills.

Teams consisted of three undergraduate computer programmers and a faculty sponsor who served as a coach.

“We are very proud of these students as they beat many quality programs in the region. I think this is a feather in our cap as a department, division and College,” stated Jim Johnston, associate professor of computer science and the team's coach. "Concord's mathematics/computer science degree program prepares students for a wide variety of career opportunities including software engineering, systems analysis and design, and systems administration, as well as graduate studies. Our team's performance demonstrates the quality of the math/computer science program at Concord.”
