Reminder: Concord Homecoming Events Week of October 13

Athens, W. Va. – Concord College is hosting Homecoming for fall 2003 the week of October 13. Alumni events center around honoring veterans and the theme for student’s activities will be “television sitcoms.”

HOMECOMING EVENTS

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 14, 7:45 a.m. departure-Tour of the D-day Memorial in Bedford, Virginia, cost per person $40, not including lunch (all day tour) The general public is invited to tour the memorial. Reservations required. Contact the Alumni Office for more information.

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 15, 1:45 p.m. departure-Tour of military memorabilia at the Princeton Memorial Building.

9 p.m.-Student groups vying for campus bragging rights will be performing their best renditions of TV sitcoms during a lip sync contest.

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 16, 7:15 a.m. departure-Tour of the bunker at The Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs, WV, cost per person $25, not including lunch. Anyone interested in visiting the bunker is invited to attend, reservations required. Contact the Alumni Office for more information.

6 p.m.-Annual homecoming parade in Athens led by Grand Marshal and former Coach Robert "Killer" Kyle and by all veterans.

AFTER THE PARADE-Annual bonfire will follow in the valley behind the College Center.

8 p.m.-Homecoming play, “When You Comin’ Back Red Ryder?” Alexander Fine Arts Center, H.C. Paul Theatre. Tickets are $5 general admission, $4 senior citizens, and $2 non-Concord students. (Contact the box office for reservations, 1-304-384-5101.)

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 17, 4:30 p.m.-A special military Retreat Ceremony will held prior to the banquet in front of Marsh Hall, led by CTD Cadet Tom France, with all cadets and veterans participating. Rebecca Terry, granddaughter of Tony Whitlow, well known retired Mercer County legislator and an active member of various veterans’ organizations and the organizer of the Princeton Memorial Building’s Veterans Display, will sing the national anthem.

5 p.m.-Alumni Association fall banquet, speakers will be Dr. Joseph Marsh, Concord president emeritus, who served in the United States Navy as a gunnery officer aboard the USS Hale (DD) 642 and Mr. Harry Finkelman, Concord professor of business emeritus, who served in the United States Air Force as a radio operator/gunner on a B24 Bomber (39 missions) with additional remarks by Robert Kyle, Concord professor of health and physical education emeritus and the drill instructor for the CTD (Civilian Training Detachment) Cadets as well as other military installations. The Concord Commanders will also be performing favorite musical selections at the banquet. Banquet cost per person is $18, reservations requested by October 13.

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 18, 12:15 p.m.-Homecoming game, Callaghan Stadium. The College is providing FREE game tickets to all vets who register. Alumni can stop by the tailgater for free refreshments and information before and during the game. Following the game, there will be alumni social in the lobby of the Fine Arts Center.

SUNDAY-OCTOBER 19, 9:30 a.m.-Veteran memorial service in the State Room, College Center Building, followed by a brunch. Registration required.

The Princeton Hampton Inn is offering special rates for those who identify themselves as veterans attending these events. Call 1-800-Hampton or locally, 1-304-431-2580, for more information. Updates on all the events will available at their registration desk.
