Concord Students “Salute” Soldiers Tuesday, April 22

This is a busy time for college students with finals and graduation nearing, but members of Gamma Beta Phi want to take time from their busy schedule to plan an event that will salute the soldiers who are fighting for our freedom in Iraq.

A day-long event, “Salute to the Soldiers,” will be held Tuesday, April 22, with participation from many campus organizations and invitations extended to community groups.

The event kicks off at 11 a.m. with a “Step/Stomp” Show. Next, at 3 p.m., the organizations will participate in “Boot Camp 101,” and at 7 p.m. a ceremony will be conducted to salute the soldiers.

The public is invited to bring pictures of loved ones serving in the Armed Forces for a special display board.

All the events will take place at the Gamma Beta Phi canopy on the lawn between the Alexander Fine Arts Center and Marsh Hall. In case of rain, the events will move to the gymnasium in the Leslie R. and Ruby Webb Carter Center.

Donations will be accepted that will benefit “AdaptaPlatoon,” which is a non-profit organization created by mothers of soldiers from across the United States.

Those interested in participating are urged to contact Gamma Beta Phi at 1-304-384-5211.

Gamma Beta Phi President and Chair for “Salute to Soldiers,” Vicki Reed stated that: “As a student at Concord College, I want to recognize and support not only the local servicemen, but my fellow students who are serving in the armed forces as well. The project first began as a donation drive for AdoptaPlatoon. As we were working on ideas, a simple project quickly turned into a full day of activities and support for the soldiers. I want to provide as much support as I can for those who are risking their lives in a fight for freedom.”

Reed is from Princeton, W.Va.

Co-chairs for the event are: Shawna Wagner from Buchannon, W.Va., and Lauren Taylor from Madison, Va.

Committee members include: Amia Downes, Morgantown, W.Va.; Amber Huffman, Union, W.Va.; Leslie Farris from Beckley, W.Va., Amy Bair from White Oak, W.Va., Toni Muncy, Mercer County, W.Va.; Sarah Sumrall, Oviedo, Fla.; Crystal Maxey, Herndon, W. Va. and Misty Lane from Herndon, W.Va.

Gamma Beta Phi is a national honor and service society. The Concord College Chapter is one of Gamma Beta Phi’s oldest and still active chapters in the United States, chartered in 1965 as the twenty-third chapter. Gamma Beta Phi members are not only required to have a 3.0 GPA, but they must also participate in a number of community service projects to retain their membership.
