Nationally-Known Artist to Show in Beckley

Athens, W.Va. - Fernando Porras, art instructor for Concord College, is hosting an art show at Soldier’s Memorial Theatre Centre Gallery (SMTCG), 200 South Kanawha Street, Beckley, W.Va. The name of the show is Children of the Rainforest and will be on display from Friday, October 25 through Friday, November 22. Gallery hours are Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Other hours are available by appointment.

Mr. Porras will be holding a special artist’s presentation, Friday, October 25, 7 p.m.

The artist, who prefers to be called Fernando, has painted since his childhood where he grew up in Maturin, Venezuela, and has shown his paintings at many galleries in the eastern United States including: New York, Dallas, Charlotte, Miami, and Charleston, S.C. He focuses on painting the children who inhabit a dense, tropical forest in the delta of the Orinoco River, in northeastern Venezuela. The children, typically dark-skinned with large brown eyes, have inspired the painter with their innocence, beauty, and mystery. They belong to the gentle tribe of the Warauno people. Like many other indigenous groups of the South American rainforest, their civilization is being shattered by the constant exploitation of the area. Fernando, a native Venezuelan, revels through his oils, watercolors, and clay pieces, a portrait of this incredible people. It is his intent to create awareness for the importance of their culture and their plight to keep their customs alive.

“SMTCG has done a wonderful job helping Concord College’s art majors, and I appreciate this opportunity to show my work in Beckley. I hope the residents of Beckley will support SMTCG by attending the shows that are held at their facility,” stated Fernando.
