Concord Student Garners Role in Feature Film

Athens, W.Va. - Kahlil Iohann Joseph, one of Concord College’s most experienced actors, has been cast in a starring role in a professional independent feature film, to be released the end of this year.

The drama, unnamed at this time, is set in America today and describes the friendship that develops between two Indian men and a Caucasian-American woman. It is being produced by Frederick Films, headquartered in Frederick, Md.

Joseph will be playing Talvin. “I consider this a role of a lifetime, for a variety of reasons,” he stated. “I would like to change Hollywood’s (and a lot of America’s) stereotyping of Indians. “Not all Indians speak with exaggerated, thick accents like Apu on The Simpsons,” asserts Kahlil, “nor is India a land of snake charmers and jungles. Also, not all Indians are cab drivers, doctors, or engineers.”

Prior to his arrival at Concord College in fall 1999, Joseph was a working actor on a prime-time cable-television drama in India. He also worked in theater, with a leading role as Jean Valjean in India’s 1998 premiere of the acclaimed Broadway musical Les Miserables.

Joseph earned a B.A. in English literature from Delhi University, and is pursuing a second B.A., in communication arts, with emphases in theatre and broadcasting, at Concord College. He plans to pursue a Master’s degree after graduating from Concord.

Joseph has performed in major roles in several Concord College theatre plays, and has performed with the Athens/ Concord Community Players since 2001, as well as with the Concord Dance Ensemble. He was student-director of True West last December, with two of his lead actors winning Outstanding Performance by an Actor awards for 2001-2002.

In the summers of 2001 and 2002, he performed professionally in the nationally acclaimed top American outdoor drama TECUMSEH! in Ohio.

Frederick Films will market the film on DVD and VHS as rentals, and on cable television. It will also be shown at major film festivals in the U.S. and Europe.

“I am extremely grateful for this opportunity,” stated Joseph, “as this film will be my ‘calling card’ for agents and casting directors in Hollywood. I am also grateful for the support of the people in my life who believe in me—Concord faculty members Dr. Ronald Burgher and Dr. James Lile, my fiancée, Patzi Dvoiatchka, and Michael Curry, vice president for admissions and finance.”

Joseph is featured on the home page of Frederick Films, www.frederickfilms.com.
