Parkways Authority to Meet at Concord College, Thursday, October 24
Athens, W.Va. - The West Virginia Parkways, Economic Development and Tourism Authority will hold its monthly meeting at Concord College, Athens, W.Va., Thursday, October 24. The public meeting will begin at 10:30 a.m. in the Concord Room in Marsh Hall (administration building), adjacent to the president’s office.
Officers and members of the Authority are: Secretary of Transportation Fred VanKirk, chairman; Thomas A. Winner of Oak Hill, vice chairman; former Concord College President Joseph F. Marsh of Athens, secretary; M. Ann Bradley of Charleston, assistant secretary; David L. Dickirson of Ripley; former Governor Hulett C. Smith of Beckley; and, former State Senator Alan L. Susman of Beckley. Lawrence F. Cousins is general manager.
The Authority is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the West Virginia Turnpike. State Police Troop 7, which serves the Turnpike, is financed by the Authority. Also, the Authority is responsible for the operation of Tamarack, the three travel plazas along the highway, and the Travel Information Center in Princeton.
In the areas of economic development and tourism, the Authority invests in promising economic development projects with the expectation of a financial return, and helps promote deserving tourism events. Examples include providing assistance to historic Bramwell, to historic Hinton, to fairs and festivals in Princeton and Bluefield, and to the Athens-Concord Town Social.
Following the meeting there will be a lunch in the College Center State Room for the members and staff of the Authority, during which Dr. David R. Bard, professor of history at Concord College, will talk about his recent book, The Civil War in the New River Valley, which the Authority supported by a significant investment that has been completely recovered with a profit through sales of the book.
