McDowell County Native to Speak at Concord’s Alumni Banquet

Athens, W.Va. - Tony Colobro, a Kimball, W.Va., native and graduate of Concord College, will be speaking at Concord College’s annual fall athletics/alumni banquet, Friday, October 11, 6 p.m., in the cafeteria annex of the College Center. Registration for the event begins at 5 p.m.

Colobro is professor emeritus of physical education for Concord College and is the “winningest” football coach in the College’s history. He obtained his undergraduate degree from Concord College in 1948, and his M.S. degree in physical education from West Virginia University. Colobro proudly served a stint in the U.S. Army, during World War II, and began his coaching career at Iaeger High School, in McDowell County. He also coached at Welch High School and Bluefield State College (BSC). While at BSC, he served as the institution’s athletic director from 1966 until 1973.

In 1974, Colobro was appointed head football coach at Concord, retiring in 1982, after a 35-year coaching career.

Colobro racked up six Southern Division wins, four Coal Bowl championships, and attended four NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) post-season national football playoffs. Colobro was the WVIAC (West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) football coach of the year five times and the WVIAC conference coach of the year in 1977. He was selected by the Sports Writers Association as one of the top coaches of all time in the WVIAC between 1924 and 1974, and inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame in 1985—the only person from Concord to receive this honor.

Alumni Director Kati Whittaker: “We are very pleased that Tony Colobro will be serving as speaker this year. Coach Colobro will offer us his unique insights about Concord that comes with his 55-plus years of combined experience as student, alumnus, coach, professor, and volunteer. Coach Colobro is a dedicated Concordian and we are proud to announce him as our fall banquet speaker for this year.”
