Athletic Director Position Filled at Concord

Athens, W.Va. - Mr. Steven D. Lee accepted the position of athletic director at Concord College and began his duties July 1.

"We formed a search committee and each committee member spent more than 30 hours reviewing 29 applications from prospective candidates and conducting 11 interviews," stated Debbie Curry, vice president for student and staff affairs. The search committee identified several individuals who had strong credentials and indicated a desire to work at Concord. The College extended an offer to Mr. Steven D. Lee.

"We are pleased that Mr. Lee accepted our offer," stated Curry.

Lee was formerly director of athletics at Chowan College in Murfreesboro, North Carolina. In addition to serving as athletic director, he coached football and taught physical education and sports management, and was Chowan’s NCAA compliance officer. In addition, he served on numerous administrative committees and was director of the athletic department’s fund raising club. Lee has experience in other college administrative areas including financial aid, admissions and the office of registrar.

Lee is from Milesburg, Pennsylvania, and graduated with a double major in geography and social science with a secondary education certification from Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania. He received his Master of Science degree in physical education-sports management from West Virginia University. He and his wife, Doris, have two children, Mark and Jennifer, who are both employed in athletic-related fields. Mark teaches and coaches at Southwestern College in Kansas, and Jennifer is an athletic trainer in Suffolk, Virginia.

Lee stated, "I coached football at Fairmont State for three years during the 1980s. From an athletic standpoint, I remember that Concord had a tradition of excellent coaches and players.

"Concord is a NCAA division two college and Chowan was in a division three category. I think there are a lot of opportunities for our athletic program to grow.

"I’m working on a game plan that will include fundraising activities that we need to explore. A lot of things are already in place at Concord, and we may simply need to tweak. We want to give coaches a chance to win. I am impressed with how the coaches work together and how they welcomed me.

"We’re excited about moving here. Doris and I hope to move in August."

Concord President Jerry Beasley: "I am confident that Steven Lee will work with our coaches, student athletes and friends of the college to improve the program. Steve has a wide range of experience that will benefit Concord College. We expect to be more competitive on the field and to continue the recent improvements of the academic performance of our athletes. I believe that Steve will build a program that rests on fairness to all concerned and earns the respect of all the College’s constituencies.

"We welcome Steve and Doris, and we think he is a great fit for our students, coaches and athletic department."
