Concord College Coeds Win National Competition for Graduate Fellowship

Athens, W.Va. - Two Concord College coeds, both spring 2002 Concord graduates and both graduates of Shady Spring High School, have won prestigious H. Y. Benedict Graduate Fellowships from the Alpha Chi Honor Society.

Sarah B. Bennett and Ruschelle M. Smiroldo were inducted into Concord College's West Virginia Beta Chapter of the Alpha Chi Honor Society on the basis of their outstanding academic performance and exemplary personal character. Both students presented research projects during the spring 2002 semester to the Alpha Chi national competition for Benedict Fellowships. The Society presently has over 350 chapters nationwide, so Bennett and Smiroldo were in competition for the fellowship with students from all over the United States.

This year, Alpha Chi has awarded ten Benedict Fellowships, with two of the ten being won by the Concord College duo. Bennett will use her $2500 award to partially defray the expenses of her attendance this fall at the Harvard University Law School. Smiroldo has been accepted at Columbia University and plans to use her $2500 for her graduate program as well.

Smiroldo, who resides in Beaver, W.Va., graduated from Shady Spring High School in 1998. Bennett hails from Shady Spring, W.Va. and was a 1999 graduate of Shady Spring High School.
