True West at Concord College Beginning December 6

Athens, W.Va. - The Concord Community Players will present True West, a delightful blend of entertainment and intellectual stimulation by Sam Shepard, at 8:00 p.m., December 6, 7, and 8 in the H.C. Paul Theatre.

True West portrays a classic conflict between two brothers while examining the darker regions hidden in the human sub-conscience. The first brother, Austin, played by Adam Shatarsky from Leesburg, Va., is a successful screenwriter working intently in suburban Los Angeles on his latest script for producer Saul Kimmer, played by Aaron Brakefield from Coal City, W.Va. The drama begins when Austin’s unproductive brother, Lee, played by Matt Campbell from Man, W.Va., unexpectedly returns after living in the desert for three months. Austin becomes enraged, when Saul prefers Lee’s novice idea over his expert creation. Lee believes that his idea of a screenplay successfully depicts the “true” western story. The cast also features Jeanne Mahaffey from Ashburn, Va., as their mother.

According to the director, Kahlil Joseph from Chillicothe, Ohio, “The beauty about True West is that Sam Shepard has so explicitly depicted the Jekyll and Hyde hidden in every individual as well as the fragmented family omnipresent in today’s society.” The drama delineates the quagmire relation between success, education and creativity as the audience can precisely identify with the Austins and Lees in their own lives.

True West is not for audiences under the age of 16. Reservations can be made at the Concord College box office in the Alexander Fine Arts Center beginning November 22, 2001 between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. or by calling 1-304-384-5101. Ticket prices are $5 for adults, $4 seniors, and $2 for non-Concord students.
