Verizon Provides Scholarship to Concord Students

Athens, W.Va. - Government Relations & External Affairs Area Manager Michael P. Newman, with Verizon West Virginia, provided the annual contribution to the Verizon Scholarship Fund at Concord College. The Verizon scholarship is awarded to students in business and teacher education.

“Verizon looks at this scholarship as an investment in our community,” stated Mr. Newman. “It is an investment in West Virginia’s future. This college generates future customers and future employees for Verizon. America is much stronger with a workforce that is well educated, and we like what we see at Concord.”

Vice President for Development J. Douglas Machesney accepted the scholarship funds on behalf of the College. He commented that Verizon has provided scholarships to Concord’s students for the past 15 years.

“Currently Verizon is partnering with Concord to provide a library science class to students in Boone, Kanawha, and Ohio Counties via the Internet. We can teach students anywhere a ‘receiving station’ can be set up. The College will use distance learning to provide classes to students who otherwise would not be served by colleges or universities.”
