Exit Survey Summary Data Confirms the Mission of Concord

Athens, W.Va. - The mission of Concord College is to provide a quality, liberal-arts-based education, to foster scholarly activities and to serve the regional community. Every semester, the College conducts an exit survey to confirm whether it is achieving the mission.

“Federal regulations require institutions of higher education to be accountable for the assessment of their students’ education,” stated Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs April Puzzuoli. “These surveys are given to seniors as a part of their graduation packets. We are interested in our students’ perception of their academic learning. The return rate is usually fairly high.”

According to the 1998-99 Exit Survey Summary, the results are as follows:

  • The College’s top three majors are 1) education, library science and physical education; 2) business and economics; and 3) social sciences.
  • 25 percent of survey respondents reported they were from Mercer County, West Virginia; 20 percent reported they were from Raleigh County, West Virginia; and 11 percent reported they were from Virginia.
  • Excellent location and affordability were two of the factors chosen by 25 percent of the respondents as contributing to their decision to attend Concord. Also, 25 percent of those surveyed noted that Concord’s academic reputation influenced their decision.

“Affordability,” noted Puzzuoli, “is a direct result of scholarships that are funded by the generous contributions of Concord alumni, and friends of the College.”

  • A range from 85-97 percent of respondents answered that they had gained and developed writing, mathematics, critical thinking, public speaking, and computer/technical literacy skills thorough Concord’s general studies program. The majority also answered that they were satisfied with the overall quality of teaching at Concord.
  • In September of 1999, 77 percent of graduates answered that Concord adequately prepared them for a career and/or graduate or professional school, and provided a growth experience.
