Jigs, Reels and Hornpipes: Celtic Musicians to Perform at Concord
Athens, W.Va. - HESPERUS and three-time U.S. Scottish fiddle champion Bonnie Rideout collaborate in a lively concert on Thursday, March 1, 2001. The performance will take place at the Alexander Fine Arts Center at Concord College at 8:00 p.m.
Bonnie Rideout is a three-time U.S. Scottish fiddle champion who has been featured in venues from the Kennedy Center to the Edinburg International Festival. At Edinburg in 1996, she was invited to present eighteenth century and Highland fiddle styles, the only American to receive such an honor. With an ensemble of fiddles, harps, hammered dulcimer, lute, recorders and viola da gamba, HESPERUS uncovers the living roots of the jigs, reels, hornpipes and airs that sparked the current Celtic revival.
The concert will highlight dances from classic collections by Bunting, O’Riley, Gow, Hume, and Playford; divisions on a ground from Walsh’s Division Violin and Division Flute; Variations on Favorite Aires by Thumoth and special treasures from the Panmure, Skene, Rogers, Ker and Manchester manuscripts.
Many works will receive their twentieth-century premiere in this program. Ticket prices are $5.00 for adults, $4.00 for senior citizens, and $2.00 for non-Concord students. For more information call 1-304-384-5101.
