Free Workshop for Those Interested in College

Athens, W.Va. - Dr. Bill O’Brien, director of Concord College’s Beckley Center will be conducting a free workshop entitled Reading for Understanding. The workshop will be held Saturday morning, September 9, 2000, 9:00 a.m.-11:30 a.m. in Room 123 at the Mining Academy.

Dr. O’Brien will provide strategies for improving reading comprehension for college students, or those interested in attending college. He will emphasize strategies to take students beyond simply “reading for information” and will introduce students to the skills of analysis, synthesis, and reading critically with an eye toward real understanding.

“While the general theme of the workshop focuses on ‘How to Read a Book,’ stated O’Brien, “special attention will be given to reading textbooks efficiently and well.”

The workshop is free to the public and registration is not required.
